Simple Daisy Granny Square

Of all of the flower inspired granny squares out there, this one might just be the simplest! The simple daisy granny square is clean, classic, and endlessly charming, giving you that fresh-picked daisy look in only 3 rounds. It’s the kind of square that works beautifully on its own or as part of a larger project, and its petite size means it looks great in nearly any weight yarn! That’s what I call the perfect “stash buster.”

Skill Level

Beginner — This square uses basic stitches but adds a new spin on the “treble crochet” stitch. We will work treble crochet stitches “together” to create the petals. It’s a crochet decreasing technique that’s great for beginners to practice with this square!

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Any weight yarn you love – I used three colors of worsted (4) weight acrylic.
  • Hook: Use a hook that matches your yarn label’s recommendation. I used a 5 mm hook.
  • Notions: Scissors, a tall glass of lemonade

Gauge & Size

Gauge is up to you and your yarn and hook size. Since this is a quick, 3-round square, they can be rather petite! Mine barely reached the 4″ mark.

Pattern Notes

  • We first work the center of the daisy then add the petals then complete the border and squaring process with a single round border round.
  • Starting chains will mostly count as stitches in this pattern. We’ll clarify in the instructions at the beginning of each round.
  • We will not turn our work. The right side will always be facing you.

To Start

In daisy center color, ch4, sl st to the first ch to create a ch4 ring. Alternatively, you could make a magic circle.

Round 1

In flower center color, ch3 (counts as 1dc) and work 15 more dc into the ch4 ring. Sl st to the top of your starting ch3 to complete the rnd. (16dc)
Fasten off flower center color.

Round 2

In flower petal color, ch4 (counts as 1tr), make 1tr in the same st but don’t pull through the last two loops on your hook (incomplete tr). Begin another tr into the same st and again, do not complete the last “pull through 2” for an incomplete tr.

With 3 loops on your hook, yo and pull through 3 to complete a tr3tog. Chain 1. Complete another tr3tog in the very next st.

Continue working tr3togs in each stitch from round 1 with ch1’s between them. Sl st to the top of your starting ch4 to complete the rnd. (16tr3togs, 16chs)

Fasten off flower petal color.

Round 3

Fasten on border color in any ch1 space. Ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in the same st *(total of 3dc in the ch sp). Into the next ch1 sp, work 3hdc. In the next ch1 sp, work 3dc. Into the next ch1 sp, work (3tr, ch2, 3tr) all into the same ch sp (corner).*

Rep between ** until all 4 corners are completed. Sl st to the top of your starting ch 3 to complete the round.

Finishing

You might consider adding another round or two of straight single crochet or half double crochet to really square out those edges. Block the square if you’d like and really pin out those corners.

This simple daisy granny square is an adorable springy/summery addition to your next crochet project! Try experimenting with different petal and flower center colors to put your own spin on it! This is a quick and versatile granny square that is sure to impress!

Pin for later!
