Solid Granny Square

Solid Granny Square

Welcome back to The Granny Square Fair, where the stitches are anything but basic... well, except for these because we’re working up a Single Color Solid Granny Square — a neat, dense version of the traditional granny. Instead of airy chain spaces, the stitches snug right up to each other, creating a beautifully solid fabric. It’s perfect for projects that need structure or warmth like blankets, bags and even clothes!

Skill Level

Confident Beginner — If you’ve mastered double crochets and can work in the round, you’re ready for this. The turning rounds help the square stay straight and symmetrical, and the single-color design keeps things simple.

What You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Any yarn weight works! I used a 4 (worsted) weight acrylic
  • Hook: Use the size recommended on your yarn label — or go down one size for a firmer square, up one size for a looser drape.
  • Notions: Scissors, optional yarn needle, and your coziest crochet nook.

Gauge & Size

Gauge isn’t fussy for this pattern. With a 4-weight yarn and a 5mm (H) hook, you’ll get a square around 5 inches across after four rounds. Adjust your yarn and hook size to make it smaller or larger.

Pattern Notes

  • Worked in the round, joining each round with a slip stitch.
  • Turn your work at the beginning of each new round to help the square stay straight.
  • Starting chains count as stitches.

Finishing Touches

Fasten off and weave in your ends. For a crisp, clean look, lightly steam or pin-block your square — the solid stitches hold their shape beautifully.

The finished result is a sturdy, smooth square with minimal gaps. Ideal for garments or baby blankets.
