The Block Stitch Granny Square makes a pretty "traditional" looking granny square withs something a 'lil special. The introduction of a single crochet scaffold row lets you insert little pops of single crochets in a second color, reminiscent of knitting fair isle.

This square is a great introduction to a common intermediate-advanced crochet technique where you work "scaffold" rows or rounds of chains that larger cluster or shell stitch patterns are worked on top of. This also helps the square have a lovely drape so it is perfect for blankets!
