V-Stitch Granny Square — Three Colors
Down at the Granny Square Fair, we’re working up a Three Color V-Stitch Granny Square — a lacey, rustic looking square that is absolutely addictive once you get goin’.

This pattern is perfect for beginners who want to do something a little different with their double crochets and chain stitches. By using three colors (or more!) this granny square becomes something you don’t see everyday. The tall, lacey stitches mean it works up quick, has great drape and makes a project that’s not too dense or bulky.

What You’ll Need
- Yarn: Any weight yarn you love – I used you’re basic (4) weight acrylic yarn
- Hook: Use a hook that matches your yarn label’s recommendation. I used a 5.5mm hook which allowed my lacey square to drape nicely
- Notions: Scissors, maybe a good podcast?
Gauge & Size
Gauge is up to you and your yarn and hook size! After 4 rounds, in my 4 weight yarn and 5.5mm hook, my square was 5″ across
Pattern Notes
- This pattern is worked in the round, joining at the end of each round.
- We will not turn our work at the start of each round.
- Feel free to fasten off yarn after each round if changing color. You can also leave colors attached by carrying up unused colors on the back of the work. This will give you fewer ends to weave in.
V-Stitch Granny Square Step By Step
To begin, ch4. Sl st to the first ch to make a little ch4 ring. Alternatively, you could use a magic circle.
Round 1
In color 1, ch4 (counts as 1dc and ch1), *Work 1dc into your ring, ch2, work 1dc into your ring, ch1* rep between ** 2 more times, 1dc, ch2 and sl st to the 3rd ch of your starting ch4 to complete the rnd. (8dc, 4ch1 sps, 4ch2 sps)

Round 2
Fasten off color 1, fasten on color 2 in the next ch1 sp. Ch4 (counts as 1dc, ch1) and work 1dc in the same space (first v-stitch). *Without chaining, work 1dc, ch1, 1dc in the next chain 2 space. Ch2, and work another v-stitch in the same space. Without chaining, work 1 v-stitch in the next ch1 space.* Repeat between ** 2 more times. Work another v-stitch, ch2, v-stitch in the last ch2 sp. Sl st to the third chain of your starting ch4 to complete the rnd. (12 v-stitches, 4 ch2 corner spaces)

Round 3 And Beyond
Fasten off color 2, fasten on color 3. Ch4 (counts as 1dc, ch1) and *complete a v-stitch in each v-stitch ch1 space from the previous rnd. In ch2 corner spaces, work 1 v-stitch, ch2, 1 v-stitch. Continue that way to the end of the rnd. Sl st to the third ch of your starting ch4 to complete the rnd.

Continue fastening on new colors in the center of the v-stitch containing your starting chain, or repeat colors 1-3 as I did.
Work a v-stitch in each v-stitch and work the corners as instructed and you’ll be able to grow your square to any size.

Quick Tip
The toughest thing about this pattern is remembering not to chain between v-stitches (minus the corner ch2 spaces). It’s so easy to just add an extra chain in there so be careful or your project will grow too fast and ruffle.

Finishing Touches
Fasten off and weave in your ends. This can be a bit of a loosie-goosey square so stretching out the stitches until everything lays flat might be needed. Consider blocking or using a washable yarn to get all the stitches to lay evenly and have a beautiful drape!

Your v-stitch granny square is ready for all the rustic or lacey projects you can think of! This square is a great stash buster because it is so easy to fasten on new colors right into those v-stitches. Make lots of little squares or one giant square blanket! What will YOU use the v-stitch granny square for?
P.S.
